How Much Does Bush Hogging Cost?

Per Acre, Per Hour and Per Visit, Explained Honestly

Searching for bush hogging prices gets you per-acre numbers from somewhere else that have never seen your field. The honest version: the price depends on how much ground there is, how tall and thick it has grown, how rough the terrain is, and how the machine gets to it. Here is what moves the number, how one-time and recurring cuts are priced differently, and how to get one straight price for your property instead of a guess.

What Moves The Number

Six Things That Set The Price

1. Acreage

The obvious one. More ground is more machine time. But a tangled two acres can cost more than a clean five, which is why acreage alone never tells the story.

2. How tall and thick it is

Knee-high grass cuts fast. Waist-high weeds and light brush cut slower. Saplings and woody growth that the bush hog has to work through, or that need the brush cutter instead, slow the job the most and move the price the most.

3. Terrain

Flat, open ground is quick. Slopes, ditches, stumps, holes and wet spots mean slower passes and more care, and that is machine time.

4. Obstacles

Fence lines, trees to work around, old equipment hidden in the growth, debris and rocks all add passes and risk. Flag what you know about at the walk-through and the quote accounts for it up front.

5. Access

A field the tractor can drive straight into is cheap to reach. Tight gates, soft ground, long hauls from where the trailer can park, or a property an hour from the last one all add time.

6. One time or recurring

A first cut on ground that has grown up for years is the most work it will ever be. Recurring cuts on a schedule stay cheaper per visit because the growth never gets ahead of the machine.

Pricing, In Plain English

How Bush Hogging Is Quoted

How bush hogging is quoted

Most quotes come back as one price for the whole property, set by acreage, growth and access, rather than a per-hour meter running while you watch. Per-acre and per-hour figures online are useful for a ballpark and not much else, because they assume a field that looks nothing like yours.

What should be in the quote

The area to be cut, how low it will be cut, what happens to anything that cannot be bush hogged (saplings, debris, stumps), and whether it is a one-time cut or a schedule. Two quotes that differ by hundreds of dollars may not be competing quotes at all if one leaves the fence lines and the other does not.

Why the first cut costs more

Growth that has had years to establish is thicker, taller and hiding more. The first cut is the reset. After that, a seasonal or periodic cut keeps the property at a maintenance level, and maintenance is cheaper than reclamation.

Local Ground, Local Answers

Bush hogging versus land clearing

If the growth is grass, weeds and light brush, bush hogging is the answer. If it has gone to saplings, thick brush and small trees, it is a land clearing job, and the land clearing cost guide is the one to read. Zac tells you which at the walk-through, and many properties are a mix.

How to spend less

Cut before it gets away from you. A recurring schedule costs less per visit than a reclamation cut every few years. Clear access and flag hidden obstacles ahead of time. And have the same crew handle anything else the property needs, so there is one mobilization instead of three.

Questions, Answered

Per-acre numbers online are national averages that have never seen your field. Around here the honest answer is that acreage, how tall and thick the growth is, terrain and access set the price, and the number comes from a free walk-through. Send Zac photos and the acreage, and he can usually give you a straight answer fast.

Most residential and acreage jobs are quoted as one price for the whole property. That way you know the number before the machine starts, and a slow, rough field is Zac's problem, not a surprise on your bill.

Small properties carry a practical minimum, because the machine costs the same to load up and drive out for one acre as for five. Ask when you call and it is spelled out in the quote.

Per visit, yes. Growth that is kept down cuts faster than growth that has had a year or more to establish. Seasonal, periodic or as-needed schedules are all available.

A bush hog handles grass, weeds and light brush. Saplings and woody growth need the brush cutter, or it becomes a land clearing job. Zac tells you which at the walk-through, and quotes it honestly.

Yes. Fence lines, trees and structures are worked around. It takes extra passes, which is one of the things that moves the price, so it is in the quote up front.
